Throughout his career, Alpizar has received several awards such as First Prize at the Troy University Guitar Competition (2023), First Prize in the intermediate division and best interpretations of obligatory works at the Costa Rican National Guitar Competition (2017), and Second Prize in the open division at the Costa Rican National Competition (2021).

Alpizar has participated in well-known festivals such as the Music Festival of Santa Catarina, Brazil, the International Festival of Guitar Orchestras, Colombia, and the International Baroque Music Festival, Costa Rica. He served as the concertino of the Guitar Orchestra of the Universidad de Costa Rica from 2017-2019, during which time they performed in halls such as Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica and Sala Xochipilli in Mexico, and recorded the orchestra’s latest CD, Mosaicos.

Currently, Juan José Alpízar is pursuing a Master’s degree in Music Performance with a Minor in Music Education at the University of Southern Mississippi under the tutelage of Dr. Nicholas Ciraldo. Juan José Alpízar plays a guitar made by the Costa Rican luthier David Chaves Barrantes.
